Leadership
1- What is your role with CP Kids Choir and why did you help start a new choir for kids?
As a mother of three, I wanted my children to participate in a choir. The only choir I could find started at 4:15 in Midtown. After experiencing few opportunities for kinder music on the southside and experiencing how schools have dropped music from their offerings, I decided I would have to be the change I wanted to see in the world.
2- Did you sing as a kid in a choir and if so what was your favorite memory or song from that experience?
I wish! My parents started a church, but unfortunately, there were never enough kids or funds to support a youth choir. I also attended a well-regarded private school, but music classes didn’t begin until fifth grade, and choirs didn’t start until high school. Though I wasn’t part of a choir, some of my fondest singing memories are from learning the “Starlight Express” soundtrack at age four, the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack at six, and the “A Chorus Line” movie soundtrack at eight. Fortunately, my mother bought records and taught me how to use the turntable early on. Our foyer had a large mirror, and my mother and sister patiently tolerated my endless belting.
Unsurprisingly, I went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theater and Dance from Elon University.
